Super Colon Visits Jay Monahan Center

Posted: June 8, 2010

The Prevent Cancer Foundation's Super Colon visited The Jay Monahan Center for Gastrointestinal Health at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center on Monday, June 7th, to promote gastrointestinal health and colon cancer screening and prevention.

The Super Colon was a draw for all ages, including several area preschool classes. Mark Pochapin, MD, director of The Jay Monahan Center for Gastrointestinal Health, provided tours of the Super Colon for the children and others. In total, more than 1000 people visited the Super Colon to learn about how the digestive system works, what nutritional steps can maximize digestive health and reduce the risk of colon cancer, and who should be screened when for colon cancer.

Colorectal cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer death in the United States, yet it is highly curable and often preventable with recommended screening and early detection. Men and women at average risk should start screening at age 50. Individuals with certain risk factors-such as a family history of colorectal polyps or cancer-should talk to their doctor about starting screening at a younger age.
